St. Francois bus crash injures teens on MO-C route, MSHP says

ST. FRANCOIS COUNTY, MO (May 26, 2026) – Four people were injured Tuesday afternoon after a school bus carrying members of the Notre Dame Regional High School baseball team crashed in St. Francois County, according to authorities.

Officials with the St. Francois County Sheriff’s Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) said a 2020 ICBU bus traveling westbound on Missouri Route C left the right side of the roadway near Richardson Road at approximately 2:38 p.m. Investigators reported that the driver overcorrected, causing the bus to cross back over the roadway and enter a ditch on the opposite side.

One 18-year-old passenger from Cape Girardeau suffered serious injuries and was transported to Mercy Hospital South for treatment. A second 18-year-old student was also hospitalized with moderate injuries.

Two additional occupants sustained minor injuries and were taken for treatment in private vehicles.

Authorities said no further details were immediately available as the investigation continues.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Several factors can contribute to crashes of this nature, including driver distraction, fatigue, mechanical issues, and driver error. Inexperience and insufficient training may also play a role, especially when operating large passenger buses, which require different handling than standard vehicles.

Each year, there are approximately 60,000 bus crashes in the United States, resulting in injuries to hundreds of passengers and others involved.

Candice Bond, an experienced bus accident attorney, emphasized that an independent investigation should be conducted promptly in order to safeguard the rights of injured victims.

“Bus crashes are often complex, and multiple contributing factors may be involved in these incidents,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

“A skilled attorney can help protect victims from bus companies, which often deploy their own investigators to crash scenes and have significant resources to defend against claims of negligence.”

“Your lawyer can advocate for you by hiring expert witnesses, conducting driver background checks, locating witnesses, and reviewing insurance coverage, while guiding victims through the legal process,” she added.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Pending the results of the investigation, the victims may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim. Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal, noted that the aftermath of a serious injury can be overwhelming, affecting all aspects of life including family responsibilities, work, finances, and overall well-being.

“It is essential for victims to obtain legal representation when pursuing a personal injury claim, allowing attorneys to negotiate directly with insurance companies on their behalf,” Formica added.

“Insurance companies are often not concerned with the financial strain suffered by injured individuals. An attorney can assist by ensuring victims are properly represented. We work to hold insurers accountable and secure fair outcomes for those affected,” he said.
