FATAL PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Authorities continue to investigate the collision, which highlights the growing risks pedestrians face while walking along or crossing roadways.

Data from the Texas Department of Transportation shows that in 2019, there were 5,975 pedestrian-involved crashes statewide, resulting in 669 deaths — a 5% increase over the previous year.

“Factors such as lighting, visibility, roadway layout, and environmental conditions are all closely evaluated during an investigation,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner with Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “In some cases, an accident reconstruction team is brought in to determine exactly how the crash occurred. Nationally, pedestrian fatalities have risen faster than other types of traffic deaths. The Governors Highway Safety Association reported an estimated 6,590 pedestrian deaths in 2019 — the highest in more than three decades. According to the National Safety Council, another 150,000 pedestrians were injured in motor-vehicle crashes in 2018.
