Sophin Chea fatally hit at Orange Avenue in Long Beach

LONG BEACH, CA (January 07, 2026) – A 57-year-old man was killed Wednesday morning after being struck by a vehicle in Long Beach, according to police.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Sophin Chea. Initial reports indicate Chea was hit by an unknown motorist at the intersection of Orange Avenue and East 28th Street. He was transported to a hospital, where he died from multiple blunt force injuries around 11:30 a.m. The investigation is ongoing.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Each year, pedestrians continue to lose their lives on roadways across the United States. Many of these fatalities are preventable, as attentive driving can significantly reduce the risk of deadly collisions. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), approximately 2,304 pedestrians were struck and killed on U.S. roads during the first half of 2024.

“Having the appropriate resources is essential when investigating a pedestrian crash and establishing negligence,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and an experienced pedestrian accident attorney. Bond noted that roadway conditions, visibility issues, and lighting are among the many factors that must be carefully evaluated.

“In some cases, accident reconstruction specialists are needed to determine exactly how a collision occurred,” added Bond, a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News. Preserving and reviewing evidence promptly is often critical in understanding the circumstances of a crash and helping families pursue compensation for their losses.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is almost always a motorist’s responsibility to yield to a pedestrian,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. The family of Sophin Chea may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim.

“Surviving family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for lost income, loss of companionship, pain and suffering, funeral expenses, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic incident,” Bond explained. Acting as an advocate, an attorney can help guide families through this difficult period while safeguarding their legal rights.

“Insurance companies often attempt to pressure families into quick settlements that may not reflect the true value of a claim,” Bond added. “An attorney can aggressively advocate on a family’s behalf to ensure they are treated fairly and receive appropriate compensation.”
