Sione Tilini Dies in DUI South Kohala Collision on Kawaihae Road

SOUTH KOHALA, HI, (May 10, 2026) — A 59-year-old man was killed Sunday afternoon in a motor vehicle collision while changing a tire along Kawaihae Road in South Kohala, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Authorities said a 2008 BMW 328i traveling eastbound veered onto the shoulder and struck a parked 2004 Toyota Camry around 1:22 p.m.

Police reported that the impact caused the vehicle to land on Sione Tilini, who was outside the car changing a tire at the time.

Tilini was transported to Queen’s North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Two additional individuals, including an 11-year-old boy, sustained minor injuries in the crash.

Officials said the 22-year-old driver of the BMW was arrested and charged with negligent homicide, negligent injury, and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), speeding remains the leading cause of fatal crashes, followed by alcohol or drug impairment, failure to stay in the proper lane, failure to yield, and distracted driving.

The NHTSA estimates that 39,345 people were killed in traffic crashes nationwide in 2024, with 102 fatalities in Hawaii, marking an increase of approximately 9.7 percent from the previous year.

“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all factors that may contribute to a crash and must be carefully examined,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

“It is critical to determine the exact cause of these types of accidents. An attorney has the resources to review insurance coverage, hire expert witnesses, conduct background investigations, and locate witnesses. We guide families through the legal process with care and diligence.”

Bond added that accident reconstruction experts are often needed to determine how a crash occurred, helping families pursue compensation for losses following a collision.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Sione Tilini could pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, emotional distress, and pain and suffering following a tragic crash.

“The grief and emotional burden after losing a loved one in an accident can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand what families endure, and protecting their rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney will closely follow the investigation and ensure that the family’s legal interests are safeguarded,” Formica added.

He further noted that attorneys can help protect victims’ families from insurance companies and ensure their rights are fully represented.

Additionally, injured victims may also pursue personal injury claims for medical expenses, future care, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
