Sibichan Varghese Struck by Pickup Truck on Snow Rd in Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, CA, (May 14, 2026) – A Stevenson Ranch man was struck and killed by a pickup truck Thursday night in northwest Bakersfield, according to the Kern County coroner and the California Highway Patrol.

Authorities identified the victim as 54-year-old Sibichan Varghese.

Investigators said the crash occurred around 8:20 p.m. on Snow Road, west of Quail Creek Road. A 2010 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling westbound in the No. 1 lane on Snow Road, west of Hollow Brook Drive, when it struck Varghese, who was in the roadway.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but Varghese was tragically pronounced dead there.

The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado remained at the crash site and cooperated with investigators, authorities said.

Anyone with information related to the collision is urged to contact the California Highway Patrol at (661) 396-6600.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

A vulnerable road user, including a pedestrian or runner, faces significantly greater risks when sharing the roadway with motor vehicles. Because of this, drivers are expected to remain alert and yield the right-of-way to pedestrians whenever required. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), pedestrian fatalities over the past decade have increased at a rate nearly seven times greater than U.S. population growth (7%).

“In most situations, pedestrians have the right of way when crossing a street or intersection, even when they are not inside a marked crosswalk,” said Candice Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal, emphasized that in cases like this, it is important for an experienced attorney to conduct an independent investigation to help safeguard the rights of the victim’s family.

In accidents involving pedestrians, preserving evidence and reviewing it promptly can play a major role in determining exactly how the crash occurred.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is generally the responsibility of a driver to yield to pedestrians,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. The family of Sibichan Varghese may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim.

“Families of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of income and companionship, pain and suffering, funeral costs, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident,” Formica said. Acting as an advocate, an attorney can help guide a grieving family through the legal process while working to protect their rights.

“Insurance companies frequently attempt to pressure victims into accepting quick settlements for less than a claim may truly be worth,” Formica added. “An attorney can aggressively advocate on behalf of clients to help ensure they are treated fairly and receive appropriate compensation.”
