Sheyanna and Ashley McKinney injured in Noble County DUI rollover accident

NOBLE COUNTY, Okla. — The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal DUI rollover involving a 2004 Jeep Wrangler that left one man dead.

Troopers responded to the scene at around 9:22 p.m. along Noble County Road 150 near Explorer Road.

Ashley McKinney, 22, was ejected when the Jeep veered off the road and rolled, according to OHP’s preliminary report. She suffered unspecified injuries and was treated and released from Stillwater Medical Center.

Another passenger, 24-year-old Sheyanna McKinney, was also injured. She remained hospitalized as of Tuesday and is expected to recover.

Troopers said the 28-year-old male driver was under the influence of alcohol when he lost control of the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene after being pinned beneath the Jeep. He was not wearing a seat belt.

The accident remains under investigation by OHP.

DUI ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

According to the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office’s most recent data, the state recorded 2,972 alcohol-related crashes in 2021, leading to 171 fatalities and over 1,500 injuries. These incidents were disproportionately concentrated among drivers aged 21 to 34, with male drivers accounting for more than 70% of the cases.

Most DUI crashes occurred on weekend nights, especially between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m., and many involved single-vehicle rollovers and lack of seat belt use. Urban centers like Oklahoma City and Tulsa reported the highest rates of DUI-related incidents.

Candice Bond, a seasoned DUI accident attorney, shared her perspective on cases like this.

“Separate from criminal charges, a victim’s family may be entitled to compensation through a civil lawsuit against the responsible party,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“As an advocate, an attorney can compassionately guide grieving families through this challenging period, protecting their legal rights and ensuring that a drunk driver is held accountable for their reckless actions.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

An injured victim may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim pending an investigation.

Bond said, “Injured victims involved in a collision often seek a personal injury claim to cover the cost of medical bills, future medical care, loss of income, emotional trauma, and pain and suffering.

“Insurance companies can be notoriously unconcerned with the mounting costs that an injured party may accrue. An attorney can help. We protect the victims of these tragedies daily, forcing the insurance companies to pay for their mistakes,” she added.
