Shermaine Scipio arrested after deadly hit-and-run in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, LA (April 2, 2026) – A hit-and-run crash Thursday morning in New Orleans left one person dead, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

Authorities say the victim, a woman, was struck by a vehicle operated by Shermaine P. Scipio at 7:29 a.m. on the 4900 block of Chef Highway. The driver did not stop and later parked near Loyola Avenue by the New Orleans Family Justice Center, where she works.

The victim was transported to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Scipio turned herself in Friday morning and faces charges of hit-and-run causing death or serious injury, and obstruction of justice.

Police continue to investigate whether speed, distraction, or impairment contributed to the crash.

HIT-AND-RUN INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Leaving the scene of an accident is a crime, and statistics show roughly 11% of all crashes involve a hit-and-run driver. Many suspects flee due to intoxication, lack of license, or fear of arrest.

According to AAA, U.S. hit-and-run deaths have increased an average of 7.2% per year since 2009. Louisiana, New Mexico, and Florida have the highest per-capita rates.

Candice Bond, a managing partner with Bond Legal, said independent investigations are crucial to protect victims’ rights.

“Proper resources are essential to fully investigate a hit-and-run case,” Bond said. “Road conditions, signage visibility, and lighting must all be evaluated to prove negligence. These steps ensure victims receive justice and compensation,” she added. Bond serves as a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Following the investigation, the victim’s family may pursue a wrongful death claim to seek damages for companionship loss, pain, and emotional suffering.

“The grief can be overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal.

“Families need protection of their rights. A wrongful death attorney stays updated on the investigation and ensures legal interests are safeguarded,” he added.
