Shawn Woolum killed, Kia struck motorcycle in Pleasant Twp OH

PLEASANT TOWNSHIP, OH, (May 18, 2026) – A 54-year-old Marion man was killed Monday evening in a motorcycle collision in Pleasant Township, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Authorities identified the victim as Shawn Woolum. Investigators said the crash occurred at approximately 6:08 p.m. on State Route 4 near White Oaks Road.

According to OSHP, a 16-year-old male driving a Kia Forte northbound on State Route 4 attempted to turn left onto White Oaks Road and failed to yield to an Indian Chieftain Dark Horse motorcycle traveling southbound.

The Kia collided with the motorcycle, ejecting Woolum from the bike. Emergency responders transported him to OhioHealth Marion General Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The driver of the Kia suffered minor injuries in the crash.

The incident remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

FATAL MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

The crash remains under investigation, and authorities have not announced whether charges will be filed against the Kia driver.

Meanwhile, Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, has emphasized the importance of experienced attorneys conducting independent investigations after serious accidents. These investigations examine all possible contributing factors, including driver negligence, impairment, and roadway conditions.

Motorcyclists remain particularly vulnerable on roadways across the country. Because motorcycles are smaller and less visible to other drivers, riders often face severe or fatal injuries when collisions occur.

“Motorcycle accident victims injured due to the negligence of another driver may have grounds to pursue a personal injury lawsuit to recover damages,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “In situations where negligence leads to a fatality, surviving family members may also pursue a wrongful death claim after the loss of a loved one.”

Bond added, “Although financial compensation can never replace someone who has been lost, obtaining legal representation after a fatal crash is extremely important. A wrongful death attorney can assist families during a difficult period and help them work toward stability following a tragic and unexpected loss.”

According to ohio.gov, there were 19,544 motorcycle-involved crashes in Ohio between 2019 and 2023. Those crashes included 1,015 fatal incidents that claimed the lives of 1,045 motorcyclists and 12 others. Another 5,770 riders suffered serious injuries. While overall motorcycle crashes declined by 5% in 2023, fatal motorcycle crashes increased by 10% to the highest level recorded during the previous five years.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, family members of Shawn Woolum may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Surviving relatives may seek compensation for damages including loss of companionship, funeral expenses, pain and suffering, and emotional distress resulting from a sudden tragedy.

Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal, has discussed the importance of legal representation for victims and families impacted by serious accidents.

“The emotional trauma and stress following the loss of a loved one or a serious injury can be overwhelming for families,” Formica said. “We understand the hardships victims and their loved ones endure, and protecting their legal rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney can monitor the official investigation and help ensure the family’s interests and rights remain protected throughout the process.”
