Sharlene Black, Mason Baker killed in head-on Whiskeytown crash

WHISKEYTOWN, CA, (September 19, 2026) – Authorities identified two people who were killed in a head-on crash Saturday night near Whiskeytown.

According to the California Highway Patrol’s preliminary report, a Honda Civic was traveling west on State Route 299 West near Whiskey Creek Road at approximately 9:41 p.m. when it crossed the double yellow lines into the eastbound lane and collided with an eastbound Toyota Prius.

The driver of the Prius, 52-year-old Sharlene Anna Black of Anderson, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A passenger in the Prius, 19-year-old Mason David Baker of Redding, was transported to a hospital, where he later died, according to the Shasta County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office.

A second passenger in the Prius, 19-year-old Charles Casados Black, was hospitalized with major injuries.

The CHP said all three occupants of the Honda died at the scene.

FATAL HEAD-ON ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

According to AAA, more than 2,000 deaths resulted from head-on collisions while driving on divided highways between 2015 and 2018. Driver error is the most common cause of head-on accidents. Other common factors include drunk driving, speeding, distracted driving, poor road design, inexperienced drivers and driver confusion.

Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney, said that in cases such as this, it is imperative to have an independent investigation conducted by a seasoned lawyer as soon as possible to preserve evidence.

“An attorney can collect the proper evidence to help prove that a driver’s actions were reckless, which requires a variety of resources,” said Bond, who is Managing Partner at Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “In addition to the diligent work of law enforcement, an attorney can re-interview important witnesses, analyze any surveillance video from the scene of the crash and obtain phone and texting records of the liable party. Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help compassionately guide families who have lost loved ones during this difficult time, all while protecting their rights.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIMS

Pending the results of the investigation, the families of Sharlene Anna Black and Mason David Baker may be entitled to wrongful death claims. Relatives of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of love and companionship, funeral expenses, pain and suffering, and emotional distress after a tragic or catastrophic accident.

“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal. “We understand just what families are forced to go through, and having their rights protected is vital. A wrongful death lawyer will stay updated on the official investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.”

Additionally, Charles Casados Black may be entitled to a personal injury claim for damages covering medical and rehabilitation costs, lost wages, pain and suffering, and emotional trauma.
