DALLAS, Texas — The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a fatal accident that happened May 12 on the Dallas North Tollway near Royal Lane. Officials said a vehicle traveling the wrong way struck another car head-on.
Authorities identified the injured driver as Shakila Hudson, 31. Emergency personnel transported her to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where she was listed in incapacitating condition.
Hudson drove a 2016 Nissan Altima at 1:20 a.m. when a 2017 Nissan Altima traveling north in the southbound lanes struck her vehicle.
The wrong-way driver sideswiped a tractor-trailer before hitting Hudson’s vehicle. The impact caused severe damage, multiple injuries, and one fatality.
A 28-year-old female passenger in Hudson’s vehicle died at the scene. Three other passengers suffered serious injuries and were taken to area hospitals.
DPS confirmed the truck driver was uninjured.
Authorities continue to investigate the accident and urge anyone with information to contact law enforcement.

CRASH INVESTIGATION
Wrong-way accidents can occur for numerous reasons, including driver error, distracted driving, and poor road design.
The most common cause of these accidents is driver error. However, the most common cause of wrong-way collisions is DUI, according to NTSB. Statistics show that impaired drivers cause up to 75 percent of all wrong-way crashes.
“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all possible contributing factors that are considered and require thorough examination,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.
“An accident reconstruction team is sometimes needed to help piece together what happened. All of these resources are necessary for helping clients receive monetary compensation for damages or a loss following a collision,” said Bond.
PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM
Shakila Hudson may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim pending an investigation.
Bond said, “Injured victims involved in a collision often seek a personal injury claim to cover the cost of medical bills, future medical care, loss of income, emotional trauma, and pain and suffering.
“Insurance companies can be notoriously unconcerned with the mounting costs that an injured party may accrue. An attorney can help. We protect the victims of these tragedies daily, forcing the insurance companies to pay for their mistakes,” she added.
