SFMS Coach Maurice Mitchell Hurt in Saraland Accident

MOBILE, AL, (June 30, 2026) – One person was killed and another injured in a multi-vehicle crash on June 30 in Saraland, authorities said.

The deceased was identified as a Spanish Fort Middle School teacher.

The crash occurred on Highway 158 between Kali Oka Road and Shelton Beach Road Extension in Saraland and involved four vehicles, including two 18-wheelers. The eighth-grade history teacher was killed in the collision. His colleague, Maurice “Mo” Mitchell, who coaches the girls’ basketball team at SFMS, was taken to The Shepherd Center in Atlanta for rehabilitation for injuries suffered in the crash.

An online fundraiser has been launched to help pay Mitchell’s medical bills.

It was not immediately known what caused the crash.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Millions of people are injured in traffic crashes across the U.S. each year, and many face life-altering consequences as a result. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that roughly 2.44 million people were injured in roadway crashes in 2023, marking a 2.5% rise from the 2.38 million injuries recorded in 2022. The injury rate held steady at 75 per 100 million vehicle miles traveled across both years.

As investigators continue to examine the cause and liability of the crash, Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney and Managing Partner of Bond Legal, said that having a seasoned attorney conduct an independent investigation is essential.

“In addition to the diligent work of law enforcement, an attorney can re-interview important witnesses, analyze any surveillance video from the scene of the crash, and obtain phone and texting records of the liable party,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help compassionately guide an injured victim during this difficult time while vigorously protecting their legal rights and best interests.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Pending the results of the investigation, Maurice “Mo” Mitchell may have grounds to pursue a personal injury lawsuit. Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal, noted that the stress and worry following a serious injury can be overwhelming, affecting nearly every part of a victim’s life, including family, work, finances, and overall quality of life.

“It is vital for victims to hire an attorney when filing a personal injury claim, which allows them to negotiate with an insurance company on behalf of a client,” Formica added.

“Insurance companies often try to pressure victims to settle for a quick payout for far less than the case is worth. However, an attorney will vigorously advocate for their client to ensure that they are treated with respect and compensated fairly.”
