Sedro-Woolley DUI Crash Kills Anahi Rose Mendoza, Police Say

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, WA (July 4, 2026) — A 19-year-old woman was killed Saturday afternoon after she was struck by an alleged drunken driver while selling fireworks in Sedro-Woolley, according to police.

Authorities said Anahi Rose Mendoza was selling fireworks near the intersection of State Route 20 and Township Road when a speeding vehicle struck her at approximately 2:04 p.m. The driver allegedly fled the scene immediately after the collision.

With assistance from several witnesses, law enforcement officers located both the suspect and the vehicle near State Route 20 and Ball Street shortly after the incident.

Police charged the unidentified driver with driving under the influence, vehicular homicide, and driving with a suspended license. Authorities said the suspect has a criminal history in Washington as well as several other states.

Investigators said Mendoza had been selling fireworks to raise money for her first cross-country trip to Florida with her boyfriend and family members.

The crash remains under investigation. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist Mendoza’s family with expenses following the tragedy.

FATAL DUI ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

According to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, at least 50 percent of traffic fatalities in the state involved an impaired driver between 2019 and 2023.

More than 30,000 drivers in the state have multiple DUI cases within six years, and about 300 people die each year from alcohol-impaired driving. When a driver is under the influence, they can suffer from poor judgment, impaired vision, reduced coordination, and slower reaction times.

Candice Bond, an experienced DUI accident attorney, was interviewed and shared her thoughts on incidents like this.

“Separate from any criminal charges, a victim’s family may also have the right to pursue compensation through a civil lawsuit against the responsible party,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national analyst with Accident Injury News. “Along with the work performed by law enforcement, an attorney can re-interview key witnesses, review available surveillance footage, and obtain relevant phone and text records of the liable party. An experienced attorney can help protect a family’s legal rights while providing guidance during this difficult time and working to hold an impaired driver accountable for their reckless actions.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family members of Anahi Rose Mendoza may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families who lose a loved one in a fatal accident may be entitled to seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, emotional distress, and other damages resulting from the tragic incident.

“We understand the tremendous hardships families face after a devastating loss, and protecting their legal rights is extremely important,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “A wrongful death attorney can monitor the official investigation and help ensure that the family’s best interests remain protected. Relatives of wrongful death victims may seek damages for the loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident.”
