This tragic accident underscores the dangers that pedestrians face every day in this country.

Texas recorded 808 pedestrian fatalities and 5,924 pedestrian-involved crashes in 2023, representing a 22% increase in pedestrian deaths from 2019-2023, according to TxDOT data.

Although pedestrians are involved in only 1% of all Texas traffic crashes, they account for 19% of all roadway deaths. The leading causes include drivers failing to yield right-of-way and driver inattention.

The Governors Highway Safety Association says one reason for the increase is many people are driving SUVs and pickups and it’s harder for them to see pedestrians. This is part of a national trend that’s seen a nearly 60% increase in pedestrian fatalities since 2013.

“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all possible contributing factors considered and examined,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.
