Schaghticoke crash kills motorcycle rider Robert Koenig

SCHAGHTICOKE, NY, (February 28, 2026) — A fatal crash on State Route 40 Saturday evening claimed the life of a Johnsonville man, according to New York State Police.

Robert Koenig, 45, was riding a motorcycle northbound when his vehicle struck the driver’s side of a Subaru Impreza attempting to turn left to head south, authorities said. Koenig was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other injuries were reported, and the driver of the Subaru has not been charged. The crash remains under investigation by New York State Police.

MOTORCYCLE CRASH INVESTIGATION

Motorcyclists are among the most vulnerable road users, a fact supported by federal data. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 4,985 motorcyclists were killed on U.S. roads in 2018. Motorcyclist fatalities occurred 28 times more often than passenger vehicle occupant deaths.

Candice Bond, an experienced motorcycle accident attorney, emphasized the importance of an independent investigation to preserve evidence for the victim.

“In addition to the police report, an attorney can examine what may have contributed to the crash,” said Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal. “A lawyer has the resources to hire expert witnesses, review drivers’ backgrounds, locate eyewitnesses, and analyze insurance coverage. Acting as an advocate, an attorney can guide the grieving family through this difficult time, protecting their legal rights and best interests, while ensuring a driver is held accountable if traffic laws were violated,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, Robert Koenig’s family may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Relatives of wrongful death victims can pursue damages for loss of companionship, emotional distress, pain, and suffering following a catastrophic accident.

“The grief and stress after losing a loved one in a crash can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand the challenges families face, and protecting their rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney can stay informed on the investigation and help ensure the family’s legal rights and best interests are safeguarded.”
