Santa Monica Bus-Pedestrian collision kills Nicole Koschak

SANTA MONICA, CA, (May 15, 2026) – A 39-year-old woman was killed Friday afternoon after being struck by a Metro bus in Santa Monica, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Authorities said the crash occurred at approximately 2:40 p.m. near the intersection of Main Street and Ocean Park Boulevard when a westbound Metro Line 33 bus pulled away from a bus stop and struck pedestrian Nicole Koschak.

Koschak suffered severe blunt force trauma and was pronounced dead as a result of her injuries.

Law enforcement officials said the circumstances surrounding the collision remain under active investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

A vulnerable road user—such as a pedestrian or runner—is at a significant disadvantage when interacting with large motor vehicles. Drivers are required to exercise heightened caution and yield the right of way to pedestrians. Over the past decade, pedestrian fatalities have increased at a rate nearly seven times faster than overall U.S. population growth (7%), according to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA).

“In most situations, pedestrians have the right of way when crossing streets or intersections, regardless of whether they are in a marked crosswalk,” said Candice Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal, emphasized that an independent investigation conducted by a qualified attorney is critical to protecting the rights of a victim’s family in cases like this.

In incidents such as this, time is often a critical factor. Prompt preservation and review of evidence can be essential to determining the full circumstances of what occurred.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is generally the duty of a driver to yield to pedestrians,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. The family of Nicole Koschak may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim.

“Families of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of income and companionship, funeral expenses, emotional distress, and pain and suffering following a tragic collision,” Bond said. She added that legal counsel can help guide families through the process while ensuring their rights are protected.

“Insurance companies often attempt to resolve claims quickly for less than their full value,” Bond noted. “An attorney will advocate for fair treatment and work to ensure victims’ families receive appropriate compensation.”
