San Mateo Man Dies After La Prairie Head-on accident in Rock County

LA PRAIRIE, WI, (April 28, 2026) – An 80-year-old man from San Mateo, California, died Tuesday afternoon following a two-vehicle crash at an intersection in the Town of La Prairie, according to the Rock County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said the collision occurred around 1 p.m. when a vehicle traveling northbound on South County Trunk G attempted to turn onto westbound East Highway 11. During the maneuver, it collided with a truck heading southbound on Beloit Avenue.

The California man, who was a passenger in the turning vehicle, was transported to Mercyhealth Hospital and Trauma Center-Janesville, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Officials have not yet released information regarding the conditions of the other individuals involved in the crash.

The incident remains under investigation by local authorities.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT), 509 people died in traffic crashes in 2024, and approximately 24,500 more were injured.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identifies speeding as the primary cause of fatal crashes, followed by impairment from alcohol or drugs, lane violations, failure to yield, and distracted driving.

“Factors such as road conditions, visibility, and lighting will all be carefully reviewed,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“It is essential to determine the precise cause of accidents like this. An attorney can evaluate insurance policies, engage expert witnesses, conduct background checks, and identify witnesses. We work closely with families to guide them through this process,” added Bond, a national legal analyst with Accident Injury News.

“In some cases, accident reconstruction experts are required to establish exactly what occurred. These resources are critical in helping families recover compensation after a tragic loss,” said Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the results of the investigation, the victim’s family may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families in such cases can seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional suffering, and other damages resulting from a devastating accident.

“The grief and emotional toll after losing a loved one in a crash can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We recognize the challenges families face, and protecting their legal rights is crucial. A wrongful death attorney will monitor the investigation and ensure that the family’s interests are fully represented.”

“Legal representation also helps shield families from large insurance companies and their legal teams while thoroughly reviewing the facts. An attorney will strongly advocate for families to ensure their rights are upheld,” he added.
