Samantha Bragg Killed in Garfield Park Hit-and-Run Crash

CHICAGO, IL (December 17, 2025) — Police are searching for a driver who fled the scene after a fatal hit-and-run crash in the Garfield Park neighborhood early Wednesday morning.

Authorities said Samantha Bragg, 40, was struck by a vehicle in the 3900 block of West Fifth Avenue shortly after 1:30 a.m. A passerby discovered Bragg lying in the roadway and notified police.

Bragg was transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where she later died from her injuries. No arrests have been made.

The Chicago Police Department’s Major Accidents Unit is investigating the incident.

FATAL ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

In many hit-and-run cases, drivers flee the scene believing they can avoid responsibility for their actions. However, once identified, suspects can face serious criminal charges.

Leaving the scene of a collision is a crime, and national data shows that more than one hit-and-run accident occurs every minute on roadways across the United States.

Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal and an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney, emphasized the importance of a prompt and independent investigation to protect a victim’s rights.

“Access to proper investigative resources is critical when handling hit-and-run cases and establishing negligence,” Bond said.

“Investigators often examine roadway conditions, lighting, and visibility as potential contributing factors,” she added.

These investigative steps are essential in helping families who have lost a loved one to a hit-and-run driver pursue justice and potential financial compensation.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Samantha Bragg may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic accident.

“The emotional impact after losing a loved one in an accident can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand the challenges families face, and protecting their legal rights is crucial. A wrongful death attorney will remain informed on the official investigation and work to ensure that a family’s rights and best interests are fully protected,” Formica said.
