DENVER — A Denver woman underwent multiple surgeries after being injured in a wrong-way crash that killed the at-fault driver early on June 8.
Just before 3 a.m., the Colorado State Patrol initially spotted a grey Chrysler van traveling south in the northbound lanes of Interstate 25 near Mead. The van nearly struck a trooper who attempted to make a traffic stop.
The driver continued south on the interstate, ignoring the trooper’s lights and sirens.
Troopers coordinated with other agencies to stop the vehicle. A CSP supervisor directed the trooper to cancel the pursuit given the increased risk to public safety.
Information about the van was relayed to other law enforcement agencies in the area.
At about 3:27 a.m., Denver Police received reports of the same vehicle headed south in the northbound lanes in Denver. The driver ultimately crashed into a northbound vehicle near 20th Avenue.
The wrong-way driver died in the crash. That person’s identity was not immediately disclosed.
Four people in the second vehicle were taken to the hospital.
Saharai Aguilera of Denver was identified as one of the injured victims. She has undergone two surgeries but has four more scheduled.
CSP will conduct an administrative review of the pursuit per agency policy.
