Sabine Pass Passenger Van Crash Takes Life of Emmanuel Rivas

SABINE PASS, TX, (May 18, 2026) – A 27-year-old man lost his life Monday afternoon in a multi-vehicle passenger van crash along Highway 87 in Sabine Pass, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Authorities identified the victim as Emmanuel Reynosa Rivas.

Investigators said Rivas was a passenger in a Chevrolet Express van traveling on Highway 87 at approximately 3:50 p.m. when the vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a bus.

After the initial impact, the van sideswiped an Audi traveling behind the bus, forcing the Audi underneath the larger vehicle. The collision caused the Chevrolet Express van to veer into a ditch.

Police said another Audi traveling behind the bus also struck the rear of the bus following the crash sequence.

Rivas and two other occupants inside the van were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the additional victims.

The Texas Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the deadly collision.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Large passenger vans remain a common transportation option because they are economical and capable of carrying multiple occupants efficiently.

However, due to their increased size and weight compared with standard passenger vehicles, they can be more difficult to maneuver and stop safely. Factors such as distracted driving, speeding, driver inexperience, and driver error may contribute to serious passenger van crashes.

Regardless of the outcome of the official investigation, Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, emphasized the importance of retaining legal counsel to independently examine the circumstances of the crash, preserve critical evidence, and safeguard the rights of grieving families.

“An attorney can gather the necessary evidence to help establish whether a driver acted negligently or recklessly, which often requires substantial investigative resources,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and national analyst for Accident Injury News. “Beyond the efforts of law enforcement, an attorney may revisit witness statements, review available surveillance footage, and secure phone and text records connected to the liable party. Acting as an advocate, legal counsel can compassionately support families during a difficult period while protecting their legal rights and interests.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family members of Emmanuel Reynosa Rivas may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Relatives of wrongful death victims can seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional distress, pain and suffering, and other damages resulting from a tragic or catastrophic accident.

“We understand the tremendous hardships families face after a devastating loss, and protecting their rights is essential,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “A wrongful death attorney can monitor the progress of the official investigation while helping ensure that the family’s best interests remain protected. Families of wrongful death victims may pursue damages for loss of companionship, emotional suffering, pain and suffering, and other hardships caused by a tragic accident.”
