Ryan Peterson dies in van collision with train on Hwy 49 Mississippi

STONE, MS, (March 27, 2026) – A deadly train collision Friday afternoon in Stone County left five people dead and another seriously injured, authorities said.

According to the Stone County Sheriff’s Department, a van collided with a train at approximately 1 p.m. on Pump Branch Road near Highway 49.

One of the victims, identified as 26-year-old Ryan C. Peterson, a corrections officer with the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department, died in the crash. Four additional occupants of the van, ages 45, 23, 22, and 20, were also killed.

A sixth person was airlifted to a hospital in New Orleans with serious injuries. The investigation remains ongoing.

FATAL TRAIN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Train-related accidents like this can happen for a variety of reasons, including operator error, track defects, mechanical malfunctions, signal issues, or reckless behavior.

According to the National Transportation Safety Bureau (NTSB), approximately 1,000 people lose their lives each year in train-related incidents.

Candice Bond, an experienced train accident attorney, stated that in cases such as this, it is crucial to have an independent investigation conducted promptly by an experienced attorney to preserve evidence for the victim’s family.

“A knowledgeable attorney can help protect a grieving family against large train companies, which often deploy their own investigators and have extensive resources to defend against liability,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and national analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Ryan Peterson may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of victims may seek compensation for loss of love and companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic accident.

“The grief and emotional toll after losing a loved one in an accident can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “We understand the challenges families face, and protecting their rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney will stay informed about the investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.”
