Ryan Lawfer dies in Oologah head-on collision on U.S. 169

OOLOGAH, OK, (July 04, 2026) – A head-on collision near Oologah on Saturday night claimed the lives of three people and left three others injured, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Authorities said the crash occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 169 and County Road E 300, just north of Oologah. Investigators reported that a northbound GMC Sierra pickup truck, which was pulling a boat, crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a southbound Chevrolet Trax.

Among those killed was Ryan Lawfer, 21, of Sapulpa. Officials also said a 22-year-old Wagoner man and a 17-year-old from Kiefer died in the crash.

Three additional people suffered injuries, including one occupant of the Chevrolet Trax and two occupants of the GMC Sierra.

The driver of the Sierra has not been publicly identified as the Oklahoma Highway Patrol continues its investigation into the fatal collision.

HEAD-ON CRASH INVESTIGATION

The most common cause of head-on collisions is driver error. However, these crashes may also result from speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, poor road design, inexperienced drivers, or driver confusion.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 40,901 people died in motor vehicle crashes across the United States in 2023, representing a 4.3% decrease from 2022 and marking the second consecutive annual decline.

“Contributing factors to be examined include road conditions, visibility, and lighting,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“In some cases, an accident reconstruction team is needed to determine exactly how the collision occurred. These investigative resources are essential in helping clients pursue compensation for damages or losses resulting from a crash,” added Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of a victim may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Surviving family members may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic collision such as this.

“The stress and grief that follow the loss of a loved one in an accident can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand the challenges families face during this difficult time, and protecting their legal rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney can monitor the official investigation and help ensure that the family’s rights and best interests are safeguarded,” Formica added.
