Ryan Hill charged in Cota Street Santa Barbara hit-and-run crash

SANTA BARBARA, CA (March 27, 2026) – Ryan A. Hill, 50, of Montecito, was arrested Friday night after a hit-and-run crash involving two vehicles in downtown Santa Barbara.

According to Santa Barbara Police, Hill was driving a white pickup truck westbound on Cota Street when he rear-ended two vehicles stopped at a traffic light at State Street around 9:45 p.m.

Authorities said Hill fled the scene on foot, heading north on State Street. A witness followed him onto East Ortega Street, where officers later took him into custody.

One driver was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with minor injuries, while another person reported minor pain at the scene.

Hill was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail on felony charges of DUI and hit-and-run causing injury. Bail was set at $100,000.

The investigation remains ongoing.

HIT-AND-RUN INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Leaving the scene of a crash is a criminal offense, and statistics indicate that nearly 11 percent of all accidents involve a hit-and-run driver. In many situations, those responsible attempt to evade accountability by fleeing, but they can still face serious charges once identified.

Attorney Candice Bond highlighted the importance of a timely and thorough independent investigation to safeguard victims’ rights. “Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a hit-and-run accident case and prove negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “Elements such as road conditions, visibility of signage, and lighting must all be carefully evaluated. These steps are essential in helping injured victims obtain justice and the financial compensation they deserve.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Pending an investigation, a victim may have the right to pursue a personal injury lawsuit. Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal, explained that the stress caused by an injury can be overwhelming, affecting every aspect of a person’s life, including family, employment, finances, and overall well-being.

“It is crucial for victims to retain an attorney when pursuing a personal injury claim, as legal counsel can negotiate with insurance companies on their behalf,” Formica said.

“Insurance companies often attempt to push quick settlements for far less than what a claim is worth. An attorney will strongly advocate for victims to ensure they are treated fairly and receive appropriate compensation.”
