WAUKEGAN, Ill. — Authorities are investigating a hit-and-run accident involving a pedestrian and a car that occurred on April 25.
The accident happened at approximately 8:05 p.m. on Lewis Avenue south of Harding Avenue. A gray 2020 Hyundai Accent struck a 54-year-old man crossing the street from west to east.
Rosario Fernandez, 33, was driving the Hyundai Accent when the accident occurred. She admitted to drinking alcohol before the accident and fleeing the scene with her young child in the car. Fernandez later called the police to report the incident.
Investigators conducted field sobriety tests and noted signs of intoxication. Fernandez was charged with failure to report a crash resulting in death and leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death. The investigation remains ongoing.

This accident was clearly preventable. Impaired drivers are a risk to everyone on the road, and can senselessly ruin people’s lives.
