FAA: Ronnie Metcalf Dies in Small Plane Crash in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, CA, December 24, 2025 – A small aircraft crash on Christmas Eve in Sacramento claimed the life of a 70-year-old West Sacramento man, according to federal and local authorities.

The victim was identified as Ronnie Metcalf. The Federal Aviation Administration reported that Metcalf was a passenger aboard a 1966 fixed-wing single-engine plane that departed Rio Linda Airport shortly before the crash.

The aircraft went down in a field near the intersection of Claire Avenue and Rio Linda Boulevard, west of Sacramento McClellan Airport, at approximately 12:30 p.m.

Sacramento Fire Department crews said Metcalf was trapped inside the wreckage and had to be cut free. Firefighters initially believed he had died at the scene but were able to restore a pulse through CPR before transporting him to a hospital. Officials have not confirmed the exact time of his death.

FATAL PLANE ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

While airplane crashes are relatively rare, they often result in severe injuries or loss of life. Data indicates the odds of being involved in a commercial aviation crash are approximately 1 in 5 million.

Small aircraft, however, account for the vast majority of aviation-related fatalities. Each year, roughly 500 people die in small plane crashes, representing about 97 percent of all aviation deaths.

Candice Bond, an experienced aviation accident attorney, explained that incidents like this often warrant an independent legal investigation to help protect the rights of a victim’s family.

“An attorney can assist grieving families by retaining expert witnesses, locating individuals who may have information about the crash, and coordinating with agencies such as the NTSB and FAA,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “Acting as an advocate, an attorney can help guide families through this difficult process while safeguarding their legal rights and interests.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The surviving family members of Ronnie Metcalf may be eligible to pursue a wrongful death claim. In such cases, families may seek compensation for loss of love and companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress resulting from a fatal accident.

“We understand the tremendous challenges families face after the loss of a loved one, and protecting their rights is essential,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “A wrongful death attorney can remain informed on the progress of the official investigation and help ensure a family’s best interests are fully represented. Relatives of wrongful death victims may pursue damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident.”
