Oldham County Couple Ronald and Julie Momyer Die in Semi-Truck Accident

A tragic crash on Monday night claimed the lives of two adults and a child in Oldham County. The incident occurred near Vega on Interstate 40.

The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that a 2024 Volvo tractor-trailer, traveling eastbound, drifted onto the shoulder and struck the back of a parked Freightliner tractor-trailer at approximately 6:35 p.m. The Volvo then crossed the median and collided head-on with a westbound 2022 Honda Pilot.

Ronald Momyer, 62, and Julie Momyer, 61, both of Mesa, Arizona, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their 11-year-old son was transported to a local hospital and later to Lubbock, where he also died from his injuries.

The DPS has confirmed that an investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

A fully loaded tractor-trailer can weigh as much as 80,000 pounds, and any collision with one of these massive vehicles can lead to devastating outcomes. Semi-truck crashes are caused by a variety of factors — including tire blowouts, mechanical failures, improper maneuvering, lane drifting, excessive speed, driver fatigue, and sudden loss of control.

According to the National Safety Council (NSC), an estimated 150,000 people are injured in large truck accidents each year. Tragically, these crashes also claim approximately 4,900 lives annually.

Candice Bond, an experienced commercial accident attorney, said that in such cases, it is imperative to have an independent investigation conducted promptly to protect the rights of a victim.

“Commercial vehicle crashes are often complex, and many factors can play a role in these types of accidents,” said Bond, who is a Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

“A skilled attorney can protect victims from trucking companies, which often send their own investigators to crash sites and possess a variety of resources they can utilize to defend a negligent truck driver.

“Your lawyer can advocate for you by hiring expert witnesses, conducting driver background checks, locating witnesses to the crash, and reviewing applicable insurance coverage, while carefully guiding a victim through the legal process.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Ronald and Julie Momyer may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims can seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident.

“The stress and grief after losing loved ones in an accident can be overwhelming,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

“We understand what families endure, and protecting their rights is crucial. A wrongful death attorney can monitor the official investigation and help ensure that a family’s legal interests are fully safeguarded.”

“An attorney can also shield victims from pressure by large insurance companies and their legal teams, while thoroughly examining the facts of the accident,” Bond added. “A dedicated lawyer will advocate for families who have suffered a loss, making sure their rights are protected every step of the way.”
