Rodrigo Ornelas Jr. killed in hit-and-run on LA Highway 40

SAINT TAMMANY, LA, (April 12, 2026) — A hit-and-run crash early Sunday morning in St. Tammany Parish claimed the life of 24-year-old Rodrigo Ornelas Jr., according to Louisiana State Police.

Authorities said Ornelas Jr. was riding a bicycle eastbound on LA Highway 40 near Blackwell Cemetery Road at approximately 12:30 a.m. when he was struck from behind by a vehicle. The driver fled the scene without stopping to render aid.

Emergency responders transported Ornelas Jr., a resident of Folsom, to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Investigators are searching for a dark-colored sedan or small SUV believed to be involved in the crash.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Those with information are urged to contact the Louisiana State Police Troop L at (985) 893-6250.

Under state law, any driver involved in a crash must remain at the scene until authorities arrive. However, some motorists choose to flee, often due to impairment, lack of a valid license, or fear of arrest.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 4 million people were involved in hit-and-run crashes between 2018 and 2022, with over 12,000 fatalities reported during that period.

Candice Bond, a Managing Partner at Bond Legal, emphasized that prompt and independent investigations are critical in hit-and-run cases to safeguard victims’ rights.

“Thorough investigative resources are essential to establish negligence in hit-and-run incidents,” Bond said. “Factors such as roadway conditions, visibility of signage, and lighting must all be carefully evaluated to ensure justice and fair compensation for victims.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Rodrigo Ornelas Jr. may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a catastrophic accident such as this incident.

“The emotional toll after losing a loved one in a sudden accident can be devastating,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

“Families of wrongful death victims have the right to pursue compensation for their loss, including damages related to emotional suffering and the loss of companionship resulting from such tragedies.”
