Walking remains a common mode of transportation, but recent data from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) shows that it has become increasingly dangerous, leading to significant loss of life and hardship.

The GHSA attributes the rise in pedestrian fatalities to factors such as speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving, and infrastructure challenges that often prioritize vehicles over pedestrians.

According to the GHSA, an estimated 7,148 pedestrians were killed on U.S. roadways in 2024, including 46 in Utah.
