Robert Pearce Dies in Head-On Collision in Vienna Township OH

VIENNA TOWNSHIP, OH, (May 18, 2026) – A 70-year-old Howland man died Monday night following a head-on collision in Vienna Township that also left another driver seriously injured, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Investigators said Robert Pearce was traveling westbound on Warren Sharon Road shortly after 10 p.m. when his vehicle struck several mailboxes before crossing into oncoming traffic near Roy Road and colliding head-on with another vehicle.

Emergency medical personnel transported Pearce to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown, where he later died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The second driver was also taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital and underwent immediate surgery. Authorities said the individual remains in stable condition.

Troopers noted that neither driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision. Investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.

HEAD-ON CRASH INVESTIGATION

Driver-related errors remain one of the leading causes of head-on crashes across the country. Other contributing factors can include speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, roadway design issues, inexperienced motorists, and driver confusion.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 40,901 people lost their lives in motor vehicle crashes in the United States in 2023, representing a 4.3% decrease from 2022 and marking the second straight annual decline.

“Factors that investigators will evaluate include lighting conditions, roadway visibility, and the condition of the road itself,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

“In some cases, accident reconstruction specialists are brought in to determine exactly how a collision occurred. These investigative resources are critical in helping victims and families pursue compensation for damages and losses following a serious crash,” added Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of the victim may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Relatives of wrongful death victims can seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional suffering, pain and suffering, and other damages resulting from a catastrophic accident.

“The emotional trauma and grief following the loss of a loved one in a crash can be devastating,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand the challenges families face after a tragedy like this, and protecting their legal rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney can follow the official investigation closely and help ensure that the family’s interests and rights are protected throughout the process,” Formica added.
