FATAL HIT-AND-RUN INVESTIGATION

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, hit-and-run crashes killed 2,046 people and injured 18,742 others across the state in 2023. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that Texas leads the nation in fatal hit-and-run accidents, accounting for nearly 10% of all U.S. fatalities.

TxDOT data shows that hit-and-run incidents in Texas rose by approximately 12% between 2019 and 2023, with the highest frequency occurring in urban areas. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety notes that nearly 70% of victims are pedestrians or cyclists, and most crashes happen between 6 p.m. and midnight.

Law enforcement agencies in Texas solve about 8% of hit-and-run cases, slightly below the national average of 10%, highlighting the challenges in identifying offenders.
