Riverside man Elvis Ponce Jr. dies in head-on DUI crash in Indio

INDIO, CA, (April 26, 2026) – A 22-year-old Riverside man, identified as Elvis Ponce Jr., was killed Sunday evening in a two-vehicle crash in Indio involving a driver suspected of being impaired, according to police.

Authorities said the collision occurred shortly after 7:10 p.m. at the intersection of Avenue 44 and Arabia Street. Early reports indicate that Ponce was a passenger in a Toyota Corolla that collided head-on with a Honda Accord.

Ponce was pronounced dead at the scene. Three occupants of the Honda—a 31-year-old man, a 33-year-old woman, and their 8-year-old son—were transported to hospitals for treatment. Additionally, another individual found unconscious near the Toyota was also taken to a medical facility.

Police said the 27-year-old driver of the Corolla fled the scene on foot but was later located on Arabia Street and taken into custody.

Anyone with information regarding the crash is urged to contact authorities at 760-391-4057. The investigation remains ongoing.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Impaired drivers, with delayed reflexes and poor judgment, are far more likely to cause deadly crashes. These entirely preventable tragedies continue to shatter lives and families across the country. On average over the 10-year period from 2014-2023, about 11,000 people died every year in drunk-driving crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

A thorough independent investigation will be necessary to identify any additional contributing factors, including the results of tests conducted to determine the driver’s blood-alcohol content levels.

Candice Bond, an experienced DUI accident attorney, emphasized the importance of legal advocacy in such cases.

“Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help compassionately guide a victim during this difficult time, protecting their legal rights while ensuring that drunk drivers are held accountable for their reckless actions,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation results, the family members of Elvis Ponce Jr. may be entitled to a wrongful death claim for medical and funeral expenses, the loss of love and companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional trauma.

“An incident qualifies as a wrongful death when a person or entity commits a negligent or wrongful act that leads to someone’s death,” said Stefano Formica, of Counsel with Bond Legal.

“When fatal crashes are caused by unsafe behaviors such as reckless driving, distraction, speeding, or driving under the influence, families are often left with the option to pursue a civil claim against the at-fault party.”
