Rigoberto Lemus dies after being struck on 14 Freeway in Acton

ACTON, CA, (August 10, 2026) – Rigoberto Antonio Lemus, 38, died Monday night after he was struck by a passing sedan on the southbound 14 Freeway near Ward Road in Acton, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at approximately 11 p.m. when CHP Newhall Area officers and Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel responded to the area and found a white Ford pickup truck and a red Tesla sedan blocking lanes.

According to preliminary information, Lemus was driving the pickup when it ran out of gas and stopped in the No. 3 lane of southbound State Route 14 near Ward Road.

Lemus exited the pickup and was standing behind the vehicle when a passing sedan struck him. He later died from injuries sustained in the collision.

The driver of the sedan remained at the scene, CHP said.

A GoFundMe campaign has been created to help Lemus’ family with funeral and memorial expenses.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Thousands of pedestrians die on U.S. roads each year, with factors including driver behavior, infrastructure and roadway design contributing to pedestrian fatalities. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), pedestrian deaths increased 80% between 2009 and 2023, while all other traffic fatalities rose 13%.

“In most instances, pedestrians possess the right of way when crossing an intersection or a street regardless of if they are in a marked crosswalk,” said Candice Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal, said an independent review by an experienced attorney can be important in cases such as this to help protect a victim’s family.

She noted that investigators may examine roadway conditions, signage visibility and lighting as possible contributing factors. Bond said these factors should be carefully evaluated when determining the circumstances of a fatal collision.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is almost always a driver’s duty to yield to any pedestrian,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. The family of Rigoberto Antonio Lemus may be entitled to a wrongful death claim.

Formica said relatives of wrongful death victims may seek damages for lost income and companionship, pain and suffering, funeral expenses and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident.

Formica also noted that insurance companies may sometimes pressure victims or families to accept quick settlements for less than a case may be worth. He said an attorney can advocate for a client and work to ensure they are treated fairly and respectfully.
