Texas recorded 808 pedestrian fatalities and 5,924 pedestrian-related crashes in 2023, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. The agency noted a 22 percent rise in pedestrian deaths between 2019 and 2023, highlighting increased risks for those on foot.

Although pedestrians account for just 1% of all traffic incidents in Texas, they represent 19% of total roadway fatalities. Common contributing factors include drivers failing to yield the right-of-way and inattentive driving.

The Governors Highway Safety Association attributes part of this increase to the growing number of SUVs and pickup trucks on the road, which can make it more difficult for drivers to see pedestrians. Nationally, pedestrian deaths have surged by nearly 60% since 2013.

“Roadway conditions, visibility, and lighting are all factors that must be carefully evaluated,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.
