TAMPA, Fla. — Authorities are investigating a serious accident that occurred on May 26 at 2:50 a.m. near S. Howard Avenue and W. Azeele Street. Tampa police said a 25-year-old Tampa man was arrested after a DUI investigation.
The driver of a Toyota Camry struck a 27-year-old man who was standing behind a parked vehicle. The impact severed one of the pedestrian’s legs below the knee and caused extensive damage to the parked car.
Police took Richard Meadows III into custody after determining he showed clear signs of impairment. Officials said two of his associates interfered with officers during the investigation, leading to additional arrests.
A 29-year-old man allegedly punched both the driver and an officer during questioning. A 28-year-old man reportedly grabbed an officer’s vest while police attempted to arrest Meadows.
Authorities charged Meadows with DUI with serious bodily injury. Police also charged the 29-year-old man with battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, and battery. The 28-year-old man was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.
Officials said all three suspects were booked into the Orient Road Jail. Tampa police continue to investigate the accident.
