Richard Gerard Ritter Killed in Head-On Ward County Crash

WARD, TX, (June 27, 2026) — A 57-year-old man was killed on June 27 when his pickup truck was struck by another driver on Farm-to-Market Road 3398 in Ward County.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) reported that Richard Gerard Ritter, of West Palm Beach, Florida, was driving a Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck that was hit by a Ford F-150 pickup driven by a 20-year-old man at about 7 a.m. Investigators said the collision occurred after the F-150 crossed over the center line into the westbound lane.

Ritter was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the F-150 was also killed in the crash.

A Nissan Rogue driving westbound swerved to the right to avoid a head-on collision with the Ford pickup, left the roadway, and struck a metal utility pole. That driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The accident remains under investigation.

Crash Investigation Needed

Mr. Ritter’s family is now left mourning his untimely death. During this difficult time, it’s important for those who have lost a loved one to retain an attorney who can independently gather evidence about the crash and negotiate with insurance companies, which often push grieving families toward settlements far below what a wrongful death case may actually be worth.

Acting as an advocate, an attorney can help compassionately guide a grieving family through this difficult period while protecting their legal rights and best interests.

“Insurance companies are financially motivated to limit compensation and do not factor in the long-term consequences and suffering those victims will ultimately experience,” said Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney and Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

“Attorneys vigorously advocate for their clients to ensure that they are treated with respect and compensated fairly,” added Bond, a national analyst with Accident Injury News.

Each year, roughly 36,000 people die and another 1.9 million are injured in motor vehicle crashes nationwide. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding remains the leading cause of fatal crashes, followed by impairment from alcohol, drugs, or medication; failure to stay in the proper lane; failure to yield the right of way; and distracted driving.

Wrongful Death Claim

The family of Richard Gerard Ritter may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Relatives of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain, suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident.

“We understand just what families are forced to go through, and having their rights protected is vital,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “A wrongful death lawyer will stay updated on the official investigation and help ensure that their best interests are taken care of. Relatives of wrongful death victims are entitled to seek damages for the loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident.”
