Richard Alan Dykes tragically killed in Dooly County hit-and-run accident

DOOLY COUNTY, Ga. — Georgia State Patrol investigators are looking for a suspect in a deadly hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian early June 17 along Interstate 75.

Richard Alan Dykes of Cochran was standing near his vehicle on the shoulder of southbound I-75 around 6 a.m. when authorities believe a tractor-trailer drifted out of its lane and struck him near milepost 109. The location is close to Exit 109 in Vienna.

The truck driver fled the scene without stopping, according to state patrol officials. Investigators believe the suspect vehicle is an 18-wheeler that would have sustained damage to its right-side headlight from the impact.

Troopers think the truck continued traveling south on I-75 after the crash occurred. The Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team from Troop H has taken over the investigation.

Officials are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information about a damaged semi-truck to contact the Troop H Radio Room at 229-386-3333. Investigators particularly seek any video footage or details that could help identify the vehicle or driver involved.

FATAL ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Georgia ranks 4th in the US for fatal hit-and-run crashes, with 72 people dying from these accidents in 2016. The problem particularly affects vulnerable road users: one out of four pedestrians killed in traffic crashes in 2022 were struck by hit-and-run drivers, and nationally, over 60% of hit-and-run fatalities involve bicyclists and pedestrians.

The legal consequences are severe under Georgia law. Hit-and-run accidents causing death or serious injury are felonies punishable by 1-5 years in prison, while those involving property damage or minor injuries are misdemeanors with fines of $300-$1,000 and up to 12 months imprisonment. Despite these penalties, the state continues to struggle with this issue, particularly in areas where inadequate pedestrian infrastructure contributes to the problem.

Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney, said in cases such as this it is imperative to have an independent investigation conducted by a seasoned attorney in a timely manner to protect a victim’s rights.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important in order to investigate a hit-and-run accident case and prove negligence,” said Bond, a Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “Road conditions, signage visibility, and road lighting are all possible contributing factors that are considered and must thoroughly be examined. These procedures are necessary for helping someone who has lost a loved one at the hands of a hit-and-run driver receive the justice and monetary compensation that they deserve.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the results of the investigation, the family of Richard Dykes may be entitled to a wrongful death claim for funeral expenses, the loss of love and companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional trauma.

“An incident is considered a wrongful death when either a person or entity commits a wrongful or negligent act resulting in a person’s death,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel with Bond Legal. “When vehicle accident fatalities result from unsafe driving, aggressive or distracted driving, speeding, or driving under the influence, family members are usually left with the option to pursue a civil action against the responsible motorist.”
