Fatal Rear-End Crash on I-39 Kills Lulije Cosentino in Woodford

WOODFORD COUNTY, IL, June 10, 2026 — A 49-year-old woman was killed Wednesday after her vehicle was struck from behind on an Illinois interstate near Minonk, according to the Woodford County Sheriff’s Department.

The victim was identified as Lulije Cosentino. According to authorities, Cosentino was driving a vehicle on Interstate 39 when it was hit from behind by another vehicle. Cosentino was pronounced dead at the scene. Additional individuals involved in the crash were transported to a local hospital for treatment, though it was not immediately clear which vehicle they had been traveling in at the time of the collision.

The Woodford County Sheriff’s Department has not released details regarding the identity of the other driver or the precise circumstances that led to the rear-end collision. The accident remains under active investigation, and no further information has been made available at this time.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Rear-end collisions continue to be among the most common and deadly types of crashes on American roads. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that distracted driving plays a role in 90 percent of rear-end crashes.

Common distractions that contribute to rear-end accidents include texting while driving, adjusting a vehicle’s radio, rubbernecking at roadside incidents, and engaging with passengers. Based on preliminary reports, however, speeding may have also been a contributing factor in this particular crash.

Candice Bond, a seasoned auto accident attorney, stressed that in cases like this one, launching an independent investigation as early as possible is critical to preserving key evidence for the benefit of injured victims and their families.

“In addition to the diligent work of law enforcement, an attorney can collect the proper evidence to help prove that a driver’s actions were reckless, which requires a variety of resources,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national analyst with Accident Injury News. “Your lawyer can re-interview important witnesses, analyze any surveillance video from the scene of the crash, and obtain phone and texting records of the liable party. Serving as an advocate, an attorney will help compassionately guide a victim during this difficult time, while vigorously protecting their legal rights and best interests.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family members of Lulije Cosentino may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim in the wake of this tragic collision. Surviving relatives in wrongful death cases may be eligible to seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress resulting from a catastrophic accident.

“We understand just what families are forced to go through, and having their rights protected is vital,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “A wrongful death lawyer will stay updated on the official investigation and help ensure that their best interests are taken care of. Relatives of wrongful death victims are entitled to seek damages for the loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident,” Formica added.
