GSP: Rear-end collision in Franklin County kills Thomas Hyde

FRANKLIN COUNTY, GA, January 07, 2026 — A two-vehicle crash in heavy fog Wednesday morning claimed the life of a Royston man in Franklin County, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Authorities said a 2004 Jeep Liberty was traveling on Georgia Highway 17 around 7:08 a.m. when it was struck from behind by a 2011 Ford Expedition. The impact caused the Jeep to leave the roadway and overturn.

Thomas Robert Hyde, 55, was pronounced dead at the scene. The female driver of the Ford Expedition sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Georgia State Patrol officials said impairment is not suspected, and the crash remains under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Driving in fog presents serious dangers because reduced visibility can obscure roadway hazards and distort a driver’s perception of speed and distance. These conditions often result in delayed reaction times and increase the risk of severe rear-end collisions.

Safety experts advise motorists to slow down, use low-beam headlights to reduce glare, and allow extra following distance. When visibility becomes extremely limited, drivers are encouraged to pull over safely and wait until conditions improve.

“Investigators carefully evaluate roadway conditions, lighting, and visibility when determining the cause of a crash,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

Bond noted that accident reconstruction specialists may be utilized to help determine how the collision occurred, adding that these investigative measures are often critical in assisting victims and families seeking compensation after a serious crash.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

As the investigation continues, the family of Thomas Hyde may have the option to pursue a wrongful death claim. In such cases, surviving relatives may seek damages for loss of companionship, emotional distress, and the pain and suffering caused by a fatal accident.

“The grief and emotional strain following the sudden loss of a loved one can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

Formica explained that wrongful death attorneys help families stay informed about the investigation while working to protect their legal rights and ensure their interests are fully represented.
