Reading Cotton arrested after crash injures baby and mother in Texas

HARRIS, TX, (March 26, 2026) – Three people, including an infant, were injured Thursday evening in a crash involving an allegedly impaired driver in Harris County.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Reading Cotton, 36, was driving a Ford SUV on the East Freeway near the San Jacinto River when he failed to maintain his lane and struck a Nissan parked on the left shoulder.

The impact forced the Nissan into a concrete barrier. Three occupants in the Nissan, including a baby and the child’s mother, were taken to a hospital.

Authorities said the infant suffered a skull fracture and brain swelling and faces a lengthy recovery. Cotton was arrested and charged with intoxication assault with a motor vehicle.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Approximately 2.2 million people were injured in motor vehicle accidents across the U.S. in 2023, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The dangers extend beyond impaired drivers themselves, often impacting passengers, occupants of other vehicles, and even pedestrians. Everyone is at risk when an impaired driver is on the road. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) reports that every 79 seconds, someone is killed or injured in a drunk driving crash.

As authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney and Managing Partner of Bond Legal, emphasized the importance of an independent investigation conducted by a skilled attorney.

“In addition to the work of law enforcement, an attorney can revisit witness accounts, review any available surveillance footage, and obtain phone and text records of the responsible party,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“Time is critical in cases like this, and it is important that evidence is preserved and analyzed promptly to protect the rights of those affected.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, those injured in the crash may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim.

Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal, noted that the aftermath of a serious injury can be overwhelming and may affect every aspect of a victim’s life, including family, employment, finances, and overall well-being.

“It is essential for victims to work with an attorney when filing a personal injury claim so they can properly negotiate with insurance companies,” Formica said.

“Insurance providers often attempt to settle claims quickly for less than they are worth. An attorney can advocate on behalf of victims to ensure they receive fair compensation,” he added.
