MONROE, La. – Louisiana State Police are investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash July 9 along Interstate 20 in Madison Parish.
Rachelle Jefferson, 39, of Monroe died at the scene from injuries sustained in the collision. A 69-year-old Monroe man driving the vehicle also died in the accident.
The driver was traveling eastbound when he struck the rear of another vehicle at high speed. The crash happened just before 4 a.m. The vehicle left the roadway after impact and struck a tree.
Neither Jefferson nor the driver were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. Both sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.
The occupants of the front vehicle were wearing seatbelts and sustained moderate injuries. Paramedics transported them to an area hospital for treatment.
Police collected routine toxicology samples for laboratory analysis. The fatal accident remains under investigation by Louisiana State Police.
