Teen Quaneal Leone dies in Springfield bicycle crash, SPD says

SPRINGFIELD, IL, (May 25, 2026) – A 14-year-old bicyclist was fatally injured Monday evening in a vehicle collision in Springfield, according to local authorities.

Springfield Police Department officers responded shortly after 6 p.m. to the intersection of E. Cook Street and Eastdale Avenue following reports of a crash involving a bicycle and a vehicle.

Preliminary findings indicated that a teenage boy was riding his bicycle when he was struck by a vehicle under circumstances that remain under investigation.

The victim was treated at the scene before being transported to HSHS St. John’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:45 p.m.

Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon later identified the victim as Quaneal Leone, a Springfield resident. An autopsy determined that Leone died from multiple blunt force injuries.

Authorities said no arrests have been made, and the identity of the driver involved has not been released.

The Springfield Police Department and Sangamon County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the fatal collision.

BICYCLE CRASH INVESTIGATION

Bicyclists continue to face serious risks while traveling on public roadways. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that 1,105 cyclists were killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2022, marking an 11 percent increase from the prior year. Many fatal bicycle crashes involve traumatic head injuries, underscoring the importance of helmet safety.

“Bicyclists are particularly vulnerable on the road, and many factors can contribute to serious crashes,” said Candice Bond, a managing partner with Bond Legal.

“It is imperative to come to a determination of the exact cause of these types of accidents. An attorney has the resources to review applicable insurance coverage, hire expert witnesses, run background checks, and locate witnesses. We carefully guide the family of the victim through the process.”

Bond, an experienced bicycle accident attorney, emphasized that independent investigations should begin promptly to preserve key evidence.

“In addition to a police report, an attorney will carefully review what may have contributed to the crash,” said Bond. “Your lawyer has the resources to hire expert witnesses, conduct background checks, locate witnesses to the crash and review applicable insurance coverage. Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help guide an injury victim through what can be a complicated process.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of the victim may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families who lose loved ones in tragic accidents may seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional suffering, and other related damages.

“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand just what families must go through, and having their rights protected is vital. A wrongful death lawyer will stay updated on the official investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.”
