Poway Crash Kills Passenger Sherilynne Hammer, Officials Say

POWAY, CA, (February 14, 2026) — Sherilynne Hammer, a passenger in a Honda Civic, was killed Saturday night in a hit-and-run crash near Poway, California, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision occurred around 11:25 p.m. at the intersection of state Route 67 and Scripps Poway Parkway. Investigators said a Honda Civic heading north collided with a Chevrolet Tahoe turning left onto Scripps Poway Parkway. Hammer died at the scene, while another passenger sustained major injuries and was hospitalized.

Officials said the driver of the Chevrolet Tahoe allegedly fled the scene. One person has been arrested in connection with the crash. Authorities continue to investigate the incident.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Motorists involved in hit-and-run collisions must remain at the scene and report to law enforcement, or they face criminal charges. Driver behavior—including speeding, distracted driving, and driving under the influence—remains a leading cause of fatalities on U.S. roads.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 8,055 lives were lost in vehicle collisions during the first quarter of 2025. While liability and cause are still under review, Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, stressed the importance of an independent investigation by an experienced attorney.

“In addition to police work, an attorney can re-interview witnesses, review surveillance video from the crash scene, and obtain phone and text records of liable parties,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “Prompt action ensures evidence is preserved and thoroughly examined for the victim’s family.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, Sherilynne Hammer’s family may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Survivors can seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a catastrophic accident.

“Losing a loved one due to another’s negligence is both emotionally and financially devastating,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. “A wrongful death attorney can provide guidance to help families pursue justice and ensure their rights are protected.”
