Portland, OR (June 30, 2026) — A 22-year-old woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash Tuesday in northeast Portland, according to police.
Authorities said Gastelum Kaniya Anita-Nora Whitebird was a passenger in an Infiniti G35 traveling at a high rate of speed at approximately 3:27 a.m. on Northeast Lombard Street when the vehicle failed to make a turn onto Northeast Killingsworth Street and struck a metal light pole.
Whitebird died from injuries sustained in the crash. The driver, a 19-year-old man whose identity has not been released, was hospitalized with unspecified injuries.
Authorities said criminal charges are expected to be filed against the driver. The Portland Police Department continues to investigate.

“A wrongful death claim is a civil lawsuit for financial damages filed by the estate or surviving relatives of the person who died,” Bond said. “It’s important to understand that a civil case operates independently from a criminal case and follows a different legal path entirely.”
“If the driver is found liable, the passenger’s family may also be able to file a claim against that driver’s insurance policy,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal. “Doing so wouldn’t affect the family’s own insurance coverage, since the claim would be made against a separate policy that isn’t theirs.”
