Police: Deadly Portland bike lane collision kills Stephen Hicks

PORTLAND, OR, (January 02, 2026) — A 66-year-old man was killed early Friday morning after a head-on collision between a mini-motorcycle and an e-scooter in a southeast Portland bike lane, police said.

The crash occurred shortly before 5 a.m. near Southeast 122nd Avenue and Southeast Tibbetts Street. Authorities identified the victim as Stephen W. Hicks, who was traveling northbound when he was struck by an e-scooter rider traveling in the wrong direction.

Hicks was pronounced dead at the scene.

The e-scooter rider was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Police said both riders were wearing helmets and impairment is not believed to have been a factor.

The Portland Police Bureau’s Traffic Investigations Unit continues to review the case and is asking anyone with information to come forward.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Determining the precise cause of collisions involving alternative vehicles is critical, as multiple factors may contribute to these incidents.

“It is essential to identify exactly what led to a crash of this nature. An attorney has the resources to review insurance coverage, retain expert witnesses, conduct background checks, and locate witnesses,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

Bond noted that independent investigations are often necessary to preserve evidence and supplement law enforcement findings.

“Beyond the police report, an attorney can examine contributing circumstances, retain qualified experts, and evaluate all available insurance coverage. Legal guidance can help families navigate what is often a complex and overwhelming process,” Bond added.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Stephen Hicks may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional distress, and pain and suffering following a tragic accident.

“The grief experienced after losing a loved one can be extremely overwhelming,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“Our firm understands what families are forced to endure during these difficult times. Protecting their legal rights is critical, and a wrongful death attorney can monitor the investigation while working to safeguard the family’s best interests,” Bond stated.
