Pitt County stop-sign crash claims life of Calli Toller, NCHP says

PITT, NC, (July 03, 2026) – A 6-year-old girl was killed and three others were seriously injured Friday after a pickup truck allegedly ran a stop sign and collided with the SUV in which she was riding, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Investigators said the crash occurred shortly after noon at the intersection of Warren Jones Road and County Home Road. Authorities reported that a southbound Dodge Ram pickup truck failed to stop at a stop sign on Warren Jones Road before entering the intersection and striking a westbound Chevrolet SUV.

Calli Toller, 6, a passenger in the SUV, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her mother, Kelli Toller, 35, was transported to ECU Health Medical Center with serious injuries. A 4-year-old boy who was also riding in the SUV was likewise taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the pickup, a 33-year-old Ayden man, was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle, failure to stop for a stop sign, careless and reckless driving, and driving while license revoked. He is being held on a $100,000 secured bond.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.

A fundraiser has been established to assist the Toller family.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

According to the Federal Highway Administration, approximately 40 percent of motor vehicle collisions occur at intersections, with many caused by drivers running stop signs or traffic signals. Common contributing factors include impatience, reckless driving, and distracted driving. Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, said an independent investigation can play an important role in protecting a victim’s legal rights.

“It is imperative to determine the precise cause of these types of crashes. An attorney has the resources to review available insurance coverage, retain expert witnesses, conduct background investigations, and identify witnesses. We carefully guide the victim’s family through every step of the process,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

Bond also emphasized that independent investigations should begin as soon as possible to help preserve valuable evidence.

“In addition to reviewing the official police report, an attorney will thoroughly examine all factors that may have contributed to the collision,” Bond said. “A lawyer has the resources to retain expert witnesses, conduct driver background checks, locate crash witnesses, and evaluate applicable insurance coverage. Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help guide an injured victim through what can often be a complicated process.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of the victim may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Surviving family members may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a catastrophic accident such as this.

Bond noted, “Families grieving the loss of a loved one are often overwhelmed by the legal procedures designed to protect their rights. An attorney can provide valuable and compassionate guidance during this difficult time while helping ensure that surviving family members receive the compensation they may be entitled to.”
