Pink Grant Lackey killed in North Carolina DUI chain-reaction wreck

CALDWELL, NC (April 17, 2026) – A suspected drunk-driving crash late Friday night in Caldwell County claimed the lives of two people, including 78-year-old Pink Grant Lackey.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the collision occurred around 10:46 p.m. on U.S. 64 at Union Baptist Road. A 2018 Ford F-150 traveling east reportedly crossed the centerline and collided with a 2006 Honda Civic.

Authorities said the impact left the Honda sideways in the roadway, where it was struck again by a westbound 2015 Ford F-250.

Lackey, the driver of the Honda, and an 11-year-old passenger, both from Lenoir, died at the scene.

The driver of the Ford F-150, a 20-year-old man from Hickory, allegedly fled on foot but was later arrested and faces charges including driving while impaired and two counts of felony death by motor vehicle.

The crash remains under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Drunk driving continues to take a devastating toll on U.S. roadways despite awareness campaigns and strict enforcement laws. Tragically, such incidents are often preventable. In 2023, one person was killed in a drunk-driving crash every 42 minutes in the United States, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

While authorities continue to determine the exact cause and liability, Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney and Managing Partner of Bond Legal, emphasized the importance of an independent investigation by a qualified attorney.

“In addition to law enforcement efforts, an attorney can re-examine witness statements, review any available surveillance footage, and obtain crucial phone and texting records from the responsible party,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

Time is critical in cases like these, and it is essential that evidence is preserved and evaluated promptly to protect the rights of the victim’s family.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family members of Pink Grant Lackey and the juvenile may have grounds to file a wrongful death claim. Loved ones of victims may pursue compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following such a devastating accident.

“We recognize that the loss of a loved one is both emotionally and financially challenging,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel with Bond Legal.

“If you have lost someone due to another party’s negligence, it is important to seek guidance from a wrongful death attorney to help secure the justice you deserve.”
