Fatal Pileup on Fort Argyle Road Kills Willie Roberson in Chatham

CHATHAM, GA, July 2, 2026 —One person was killed and six others were transported to the hospital in a multi-vehicle crash allegedly caused by a tractor-trailer in Chatham County.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 3:50 p.m. in the 400 block of Fort Argyle Road when the operator of the big rig, identified as 74-year-old Willie Roberson, attempted to avoid colliding with the vehicle in front of him but was unsuccessful.

Investigators say the 18-wheeler was following a Subaru when it failed to maintain its lane and crossed the center line. The truck sideswiped the Subaru, and its trailer also struck a Mazda. The tractor-trailer then continued across into the westbound lanes, where it collided head-on with a Ford Flex. Following the impact, the Mazda crossed into the westbound lanes and struck a Chevrolet.

Roberson and another victim, who has not been identified, were killed in the crash.

Six people were transported to local hospitals by ambulance. The Georgia State Patrol continues to investigate the accident, and no further details have been released at this time.

FATAL SEMI-TRUCK ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Despite completing hours of training, semi-truck drivers still make mistakes that can lead to devastating accidents like this one.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, driver-related factors were identified in 2,554 of the 7,368 fatal semi-truck crashes recorded during a recent two-year period — roughly 34.7 percent. A range of factors can contribute to a tractor-trailer crash, including loss of control of the truck, tire blowouts, disabling or non-disabling vehicle failures, excessive speed, lane drifting, improper truck maneuvering, and driver fatigue.

Candice Bond, an experienced semi-truck accident attorney, noted that investigating semi-truck crashes requires a wide range of resources.

On behalf of a grieving family, an attorney can examine the crash scene and closely review the rig, the truckers involved, and the trucking company’s logbooks and other records to help preserve critical evidence.

“A skilled attorney can protect an injured victim from trucking companies, which often send their own investigators to crash sites and possess a variety of resources they can utilize in an attempt to defend a negligent truck driver,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national analyst with Accident Injury News. “A lawyer can advocate for a family by hiring expert witnesses, conducting drivers’ background checks, locating witnesses to the crash, and reviewing applicable insurance coverage, while carefully guiding you through the legal process and protecting your legal rights and best interests.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family members of the victims killed in this accident may be eligible to pursue a wrongful death claim. Relatives of wrongful death victims can seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain, suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident.

“We understand just what families are forced to go through, and having their rights protected is vital,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “A wrongful death lawyer stays informed on the progress of the official investigation and works to ensure that a family’s best interests are taken care of. Relatives of wrongful death victims have the right to pursue damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident.”

In addition, the individuals hospitalized as a result of this crash may have grounds to pursue a personal injury lawsuit.
