PEORIA, IL, (April 10, 2026) — A 45-year-old man from Kewanee was killed Friday morning after being struck by a vehicle on a bridge in Peoria.
Authorities reported that Mark Thompson was hit at approximately 5:45 a.m. on a bridge carrying Interstate 74 over the Illinois River.
Thompson was transported to OSF Healthcare Saint Francis Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries at 7:10 a.m.
Officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
Although drivers are typically expected to yield to pedestrians, those traveling on foot continue to face daily risks across the country. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, 7,148 pedestrian fatalities were recorded in 2024 in the United States, reflecting a 19.2% increase since 2016.
In Illinois, pedestrian deaths rose by 8%, increasing from 196 in 2023 to 212 in 2024, making it one of 22 states that experienced a rise during that period.
