CHP: Peggy Whitehurst killed in Shasta County accident on I-5

SHASTA COUNTY, CA (April 1, 2026) – A 65-year-old Oregon woman died following a rollover crash on Interstate 5 in Shasta County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Authorities identified the victim as Peggy Sue Whitehurst of Eugene, Oregon. The crash occurred around 11:50 a.m. near the Statton Road turnoff, approximately 15 miles north of Shasta Lake.

Investigators said a southbound 2012 Kia drifted toward the concrete median on a rain-slick roadway. The driver then over-corrected, causing the vehicle to spin out of control, strike the divider, cross lanes, and overturn.

Whitehurst, a passenger in the vehicle, was transported to Mercy Medical Center, where she later died. The driver, an 81-year-old woman from Springfield, Oregon, sustained injuries and was hospitalized.

The crash remains under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Wet roadways significantly increase crash risks as rain reduces tire traction, extends stopping distances, and can lead to hydroplaning. Even light rainfall can bring oil and debris to the surface, making roads slick and hazardous.

Drivers may underestimate how much they need to slow down or adjust steering and braking, and even a minor error—such as sudden braking or over-correcting—can result in loss of vehicle control.

“Roadway conditions, visibility, and lighting are all factors that must be carefully evaluated,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“In certain cases, accident reconstruction experts are needed to determine exactly what occurred. These resources are critical in helping individuals or families recover compensation for damages or losses following a crash,” Bond added.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Peggy Whitehurst may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident such as this.

“The emotional toll can be overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand the difficulties families face, and ensuring their rights are protected is essential. A wrongful death attorney will stay informed about the investigation and help protect their legal rights and best interests.”
