Pedestrian Jenny M. Chacho Sanchez dies in NYC truck accident

BUSHWICK, NY, (April 17, 2026) – A 29-year-old woman, Jenny Maribel Chacho Sanchez, was fatally struck by a box truck Friday morning while crossing a street in Bushwick, police said.

Authorities reported that the incident occurred just before 8:30 a.m. as Chacho Sanchez was using a crosswalk on Gates Avenue. A 2024 Freightliner truck attempting to turn left from Saint Nicholas Street struck her.

Chacho Sanchez, who was originally from Ecuador, had just dropped off her 6-year-old daughter and was heading to work at the time of the crash. She was transported to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, where she later died.

The truck driver initially left the scene but returned after being informed of the incident. No arrests have been made.

The investigation is ongoing.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Even low-speed crashes can result in catastrophic injuries or fatalities for pedestrians, who lack the protection of airbags, seat belts, or reinforced structures. In 2023, 4,354 people died in crashes involving large trucks, with 17% of those victims being pedestrians, bicyclists, or motorcyclists, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Over the past decade, pedestrian deaths have increased at a rate nearly seven times higher than U.S. population growth, as reported by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA).

“In many situations, pedestrians have the right of way when crossing a street or intersection, particularly within marked crosswalks,” said Candice Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal, stressed that it is essential to conduct an independent investigation led by an experienced attorney to help protect the rights of the victim’s family.

In cases like this, time is critical. Preserving and carefully reviewing evidence as soon as possible can play a key role in determining what led to the crash.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is generally the responsibility of drivers to yield to pedestrians,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. The family of Jenny Maribel Chacho Sanchez may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim.

“Families who lose a loved one in a wrongful death case may seek compensation for loss of income and companionship, pain and suffering, funeral costs, and emotional distress,” Formica said. He added that an attorney can provide guidance and support during this difficult time while ensuring the family’s rights are protected.

“Insurance companies often attempt to push victims toward quick settlements that may not reflect the true value of the claim,” Formica noted. “An attorney will advocate strongly to ensure fair compensation and proper treatment.”
