Deputies: Paula Poe critically hurt in St Pete Beach DUI crash

ST PETE BEACH, FL, (March 25, 2026) — A 56-year-old woman, Paula Poe, was critically injured in a hit-and-run crash Wednesday night on Gulf Boulevard, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded at about 9 p.m. and found Poe lying on the curb with life-threatening injuries. The vehicle involved fled southbound, leaving debris behind.

Investigators later linked the debris to a 2019 Cadillac Escalade found in a Tierra Verde hotel parking lot. The driver, Margaret Barah Gardner, showed signs of impairment and performed poorly on a field sobriety test.

Gardner faces charges including DUI, refusal to submit to testing, and leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury. The investigation is ongoing.

DUI ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

This crash was entirely preventable. Impaired drivers pose a serious danger to everyone on the road and can cause devastating consequences.

“Drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs may face criminal charges when their actions result in injury or death,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

She further explained, “In addition to criminal proceedings, victims and their families may have the right to pursue compensation through a civil lawsuit against the at-fault party.”

According to the National Safety Council, 10 percent of all fatal crashes involve drivers impaired by alcohol, drugs, or medications, making such incidents one of the leading causes of roadway fatalities in the United States.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Paula Poe may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim as the investigation continues.

Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal, stated, “Injured victims often file personal injury claims to recover costs related to medical treatment, future care, lost income, emotional distress, and pain and suffering.”

“Insurance companies may attempt to minimize payouts or deny valid claims altogether. An experienced attorney can advocate on behalf of victims, ensuring their rights are protected and that they receive the compensation they deserve.”
